Bakerella I Am Not... also titled The Motley Crew.

In a previous post, I mentioned the fact that all of the boys in my life...including the big one...were born  in December.

Hence, December has a way of becoming a tad stressful.

So, I really can't be sure what possessed me to try my hand at The Bakerella's reindeer cake pops.  It may have been the excess of eggnog that I was drinking...or quite possibly the large amounts of chocolate I had been inhaling for the previous three weeks.

The fact that Wilton's chocolate melts were on sale at Joanne's drove the nail in the coffin.

My coffin.

I will start by saying that Bakerella makes the famous "cake  pop" look like such an easy endeavor.

NOT.

I mean how hard can dipping a wadded up piece of cake on a stick into a vat of melted chocolate really be?

Really. Hard.

Not to mention the seventeen hundred steps involved in creating the perfect cake-pop.

And that being said, I will share with you the results.

This was the very first little guy that I created.  I was feelin' pretty confident at this point.  I like how the little bump of chocolate below his red nose resembled a small mouth.  And being that I did not have edible marker to draw a mouth, I was feeling pretty genius right about now.
031

This was reindeer number 2. My dipping technique wasn't quite as smooth as the previous "dip". However, at this point I hadn't lost my confidence.  I was beginning to realize that this isn't as easy as it looks.  The eye placement was creating a problem as they seemed to want to sink down into the chocolate.
028

Things slowly began to take a turn for the worse.  I'm not sure if the children were ready to undertake such a lofty endeavor, J-boy was in charge of eye placement and S-girl was endowing each reindeer with antlers.
026

Then things got UGLY.
At this point I'm not really sure what happened.  I began to lose my confidence. My "dipping" ability was fading.  Apparently, so was S-girl's antler placement.035

Look away if you must.
I'm not sure I can even say what happened with this poor soul. She looks as if she's had one too many.
The "lush" of the par-tay.
029

And this one?
You choose.
Confused?
Dazed?
Befuddled?
Any of the above will work..
022

This lovely lad will have great difficulty guiding Santa's sleigh.
Inspite of his "nose so bright"!
032

So, the moral of the story is....you will never find me making cake pops again.
Because I haven't got time for the pain....
no I haven't got room for the pain...

However, I will admit that the sheer excitement that my dear two year old displayed was well worth the production.  He ran around yelling "reindeer cake balls!" for 10 minutes straight.

So, now that I'm thinking about it...I guess the pain was worth it.
For this one time.

We made the mistake of pulling these out too early in the evening.  Before all the party guests had arrived.  I was having great difficulty keeping them from being licked and mauled. Oh well, it was only family...I'm sure they wouldn't have minded knowing that they were eating previously licked cake-pops.

Below is a brief clip.

And yes, after doing quite a bit of video taping over the holidays...I am painfully aware of the tone in which I speak to my poor child.  I also couldn't get him to yell out "reindeer cake balls!" for the camera.  Isn't that always the way it goes!

Julie the cake pops are adorable and he is so precious. I had kind of the same experience one time making PN butter bees. PN butter, powdered sugar & graham cracker crumbs mixed together and rolled in little oblong bee bodies with slivers of almands for wings, chocolate stripes on the body and eyes made with black decorating icing. Some looked great & some were tasty at least. The kids at VBS loved them anyway. Have a great day.

Those look great!
I made cake pops once and didn't like them- too sweet! :)
Yea, Brad doesn't tell me how old he is and other things like that when I want him too.
He also has the same purple sippy cup. Hey, it came in a two-pack and they didn't have one that didn't have purple in it. :)

Bwahahahahaha! You're a trooper! I thought my cookie making was insanity - but involving my kids?!?!? Never! I think the wonky-eyedness is sorta endearing... But can I ask - are those edible google eyes or do you have to spit them out????? And if they're edible - WHAT?! Seriously? Awesome! I think they look pretty darned good, Lady!

I agree full heartedly! Snow pops are way too much work for me and I did not even attempt to make mine look like reindeer. Super cute idea either way.

Sweets!!! This is the BEST! I'm a big Bakerella fan, but have yet to try the cake balls (believe it or not). I think I choose to let her to the hard word, and I enjoy the photos. But, holy cow. KUDOS to YOU for even TRYING them. They look absolutely ADORABLE! And the video - just about the cutest thing I ever seen!!! All the photos of the reindeers - so so funny! You make me smile, dearie! and are my hero in oh-so many ways!

Loved your drunk and slightly derranged cake pops! Excellent!
That video is darling, he is a baby doll! But, my favorite part is your sigh at the end! I know that feeling, they never cooperate when the camera is rolling! lol
I tried Bakerella's Halloween cake pops. Mercy. They turned out pretty scary alright! They looked so bad that I was embarrassed to send them to school. Had to make some plain ones!

Oh no! But the ugly/eyeless ones are the most adorable!

Oh Julie....you just made me almost pee in my pants (don't let my son read this after my post about potty training...oh wait he doesn't know how...I'm safe!). I had a feeling those darn cake pops weren't as easy as she makes it appear. Isn't that always the case? I think they look absolutely adorable! Each one looked better and better.

Your son is so precious. Love the video.

I LOVE it! How adorable is L-boy! And I just love the "lush" and "dazed" reindeer...I always knew Rudolph wasn't as perfect as he seems ;)

Melissa said...

Oh how funny!
your little man is so cute, so did you ever tell your friends that he licked the balls before they came!??? or are they just now finding this out?!!!! They are so cute and I think you did a fabulous job and I'm sure your littles just loved that you made them!

Courtney said...

LOL! I love it. They are still pretty darn cute & I applaud your effort. The video is precious!

Oh how I've missed your blog, Julie! You always crack me up! I was pretty impressed with first few pictures and then I couldn't really see the last few because of the tears clouding my eyes since I was laughing so hard! Good for you though, I applaud the effort! I have had more than my share of cake pop fails. You wouldn't think they'd be hard to make, but shesh!

Hope all is well today!

Now that was cute. I love the break down of making these. I had to laugh and then...got somewhat nervous. I just offered to make cake balls for a shower. Yikes! Maybe I should make them and freeze them just to make sure I can do it.

Hannah said...

First things first. I literally laughed so loud at your crazy and slightly drunk looking reindeer that my children woke up. So, I am mad at you for that!

I think this might be my favorite post ever. It really really cracked me up. You are much braver than I am. I can bake but decorate? Not so much!

Does it make me a bad mother if I slip them something to make them go back to sleep?

You are awesome for even trying. I was cracking up with you little commentary on each reindeer. And Luke is sooo cute...I mean, really, I just love his little voice.

Jill said...

OMGosh! I can't stop laughing. This is so funny! The "face-melting-off" effect is hilarious. Kudos for trying though.

Brooke said...

Hahaha!!! I was laughing SO hard about this! It brought back WAY too many memories of when I tried to make monkey cupcakes for Perry's birthday party this past May.

My favorite is your lush of the
"par-tay" for sure! However, I was laughing a little harder with each picture.

Here's the thing though. I like them! I think they're great. They have your hilarious personality!!
